Stations & Map

As we walk along the inner city route we will stop at 14 stations to listen to scripture readings and reflect on the suffering, passion and death of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  The stations for the Outdoor Way of the Cross this year are:

  1. St. Mary’s Cathedral
The centre and focal point of worship for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary. Pope Saint Pius X established the Diocese on November 13th, 1912 and designated St. Mary’s Church as the Cathedral. Historically and canonically the Bishop is the pastor of the Cathedral.
  2. FCJ Christian Life Centrer
After nearly a century of providing education for children from early age to full maturity, the focus has become adult Christian formation and retreat work.
  3. St. Monica’s School
We remember L’Arche Calgary, an inter-denominational Christian community where people with developmental disabilities and those who assist share their life together. We are challenged to come in touch with our own limitations and childlike stance before God.
  4. Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre
We remember the Health Care Apostolate  which trains and places lay visitors in hospitals, nursing homes, senior citizen lodges and parishes throughout the Dioces ministering to the needs of the sick and suffering.
  5. The Cenotaph
We remember The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) which promotes international solidarity, educates Canadians about the causes of impoverishment of peoples, and mobilizes action for change.
  6. Memorial Park Library
We think about the various agencies which assist the hungry, homeless, addicted, those experiencing sexual exploitation, and those in need of medical care.
  7. Cash Corner (Centre St.)
This is the street where unemployed men stand waiting and hoping to get a job for a day. Many people are unemployed or only receiving minimum wage. Everyone deserves a living wage.
  8. Street Worker's Corner
We reflect on the struggles of individuals who have been forced to make their sexuality a commodity.
  9. Catholic Pastoral Centre (15th Avenue)
This was the previous home of Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, a non-profit organization providing settlement and immigration services to new Canadians in southern Alberta.
  10. Catholic Pastoral Centre (17th Avenue)
All diocesan services have a common vocation to minister and serve the people of God by providing leadership, formation and resources to the people of the Diocese and beyond.
  11. St. Mary’s High School
The Mission of the Calgary Catholic School District is the education of the whole child—spiritually, morally, intellectually, physically and aesthetically.
  12. Former site of Elizabeth House
Although now located elsewhere, for many years this site provided a safe and caring residence for single, pregnant and parenting teens.
  13. Former site of Latour Native Centre
Committed primarily to meeting the spiritual needs of Aboriginal people in and around Calgary
  14. St. Mary’s Cathedral
A vibrant, faith filled catholic community committed to living the will of God, ministry to others and the spiritual growth of its people.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.  Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:16-17

“Christians must respond to evil
with good, taking the cross upon themselves as Jesus did”
